Test your vocal range

The typical soprano vocal range runs from C4 to C6, two full octaves. Highest female voice type. On the keyboard above, the green band is the soprano range, lined up with the keys it covers, and the grey bands are the other female voice types (mezzo-soprano, A3–A5; alto, F3–F5) for comparison.

What is a soprano?

Soprano is the highest female voice type. A typical soprano sings from middle C (C4) up to high C (C6), the note two octaves above. In opera the voice gets split into subtypes by weight and agility: coloratura, soubrette, lyric, spinto and dramatic. Coloratura sopranos are the ones who reach into the whistle register for those glassy top notes. You don't need any of those labels for karaoke, but they explain why two sopranos can sound nothing alike.

The thing that makes a soprano a soprano isn't only the high notes. It's that the upper half of that range feels like home. A lot of singers can squeeze out one high note; a soprano can sing in the top half of that range for a whole song without getting tired.

Karaoke tips for sopranos

Pop has a funny relationship with high female voices. A lot of hits are written lower than you'd guess, with the melody hanging around middle C and a few big notes on top, so a soprano can find the verses of some songs sitting low and a bit breathy. That's normal. Here's how to make the most of a high voice at karaoke:

  • Pick songs with a high chorus. The songs below sit in your range all the way through, so the low verses won't disappear into the mix.
  • Raise the key when a song sits low. Most karaoke systems can shift a song up a step or two. Nobody will notice, and your voice will ring instead of mumble.
  • Save the money note. Hold back a little in the first chorus so the last one can open up.
  • Warm up before you go big. A few gentle sirens before your turn make the top of your range far more reliable.

How to tell if you're a soprano

Your voice type comes from more than your top and bottom notes. Voice teachers also listen for your tessitura (where your voice is most comfortable), your timbre and the spots where your voice shifts gears. Range on its own doesn't decide it. Still, range is the easiest place to start, and it's all you need to pick better karaoke songs.

  1. Measure your range. The free vocal range test listens through your mic while you slide from your lowest comfortable note to your highest. It takes about a minute and your audio never leaves your device.
  2. Compare it with C4–C6. If your range covers most of the soprano band and lines up with it better than with mezzo-soprano or alto, soprano is your closest match. Once you've taken the test, your range shows up on the chart above as a dashed band, with how many semitones you share.
  3. Check where it feels good. Sing a song from the list below. If the verses feel easy and the chorus doesn't strain, you're in the right zone. If everything feels like a stretch, try the songs on the mezzo-soprano page or the alto page instead.

One more thing: the soprano range is exactly one octave above the tenor range (C3–C5). On average a man's top notes sit about half as high in frequency as a woman's, which is one octave.
