Kurt Cobain's vocal range
Kurt Cobain sings from C#2 up to F5, a span of 40 semitones, or about 3.5 octaves. None of the sources we used names a voice type, so we haven't given one.
About those notes: These notes come from the 2014 Concert Hotels chart, which measured the lowest and highest notes on studio recordings and was compiled from fan-collected data. No source we used gives him a voice type.
What Kurt Cobain's voice is like
Kurt Cobain was one of the few hard-rock singers on the 2014 Concert Hotels chart of recorded vocal range. His lowest charted note is a C-sharp 2 on Nirvana's cover of "Low Rider", and his highest an F5 on "Blew". Loudwire noted he had the most limited range of the rock singers on that chart, while Music Feeds pointed out he still ranked above Aretha Franklin. Both readings come from the same chart, which goes to show that range on paper says little about how a voice lands. His power was in raw, cracked intensity rather than notes, which is good news for anyone singing Nirvana at karaoke.
